Auckland to Raglan Bus

To travel from Auckland to Raglan by bus or coach you can either leave from Auckland Airport or from Auckland Downtown.   Although several bus services operate on these routes, only one or two operate at the right time to connect with Hamilton to Raglan buses.  The place to change from an Auckland bus to a Raglan bus is at the Hamilton Bus Terminal, on the corner of Anglesea and Bryce Streets, in Central Hamilton.  You then take the Route 23 bus to Raglan.  The times of interconnecting services are (Correct as at 21 January 2010):

Auckland Downtown terminal, 172 Quay Street outside Gray Line Offices, 50m west of the Britomart bus and train station.

• Busit/Gobus Route 23 departs Hamilton Central 3.00pm, arrives Raglan 4.00pm, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.  Adult Fare: $7.30 one way.  From November to April this service continues past Raglan to Manu Bay taking another 10 minutes.

Other bus companies operating on the Auckland to Hamilton route are Intercity bus from the SkyCity Coach Terminal in Hobson Street, Dalroy Express, Minbus Express and Newmans.   They leave from a number of Auckland locations and all stop at the Hamilton Bus Terminal, Anglesea St, Hamilton where you need to change bus and then take the Route 23 bus to Raglan.

Although it would be possible to use other public transportation between Auckland and Hamilton it is not recommended.  Train services do operate from Auckland to Hamilton, but the Hamilton rail station is located a few kilometres away from the Hamilton bus terminal.  There are also flights from Auckland to Hamilton, but the air terminal is located south of Hamilton and would require a bus trip back to the city bus terminal to catch the bus to Raglan.

A daily bus service (Route 23) operates from Hamilton Bus Terminal to Raglan and return that runs three times a day Monday to Friday and twice a day on Saturday and Sunday and public holidays.

Driving to Raglan

You can drive to Raglan on SH 23. It takes about 30 minutes from Whatawhata along a scenic mountain road.  The Raglan map below shows the route along State Highway 23 to Raglan from SH 39 at Whatawhata.   Coming from Auckland leave SH 1 at Ngaruawahia and take SH 39 to Whatawhata.  The travel time Auckland to Raglan is about 2 to 2 1/4 hours driving from the centre of Auckland to Raglan, depending mainly on the traffic conditions in Auckland.  From Auckland airport to Raglan takes about 2 hours.  Coming from Hamilton take SH 23. It takes about 45 minutes to drive from the centre of Hamilton to Raglan.

Waitomo to Raglan bus and Raglan to Waitomo bus services
Kiwi Experience has a Wave Runner service from Waitomo to Raglan leaving just before midday.  From Raglan to Waitomo it departs mid afternoon. Bookings are essential as this is an on-demand service.  It connects at Waitomo with the Waitomo Wanderer which runs Rotorua-Waitomo-Taupo.

Raglan Airfield
AIP listed as NZRA and operated by the Waikato District Council. You can download the Civil Aviation information here: NZRA. the airfield is located at S37º 48′ E174º 51′. Motel units at the adjacent motor camp and a short walk across the footbridge to cafes in the town make this a popular airfield for private flights from around the upper North Island.  There are swimming beaches near the airfield. The runway is 646 metres long and 60 metres wide. Watch out for rabbit holes and people walking across the airfield. Pay the landing fee of $5 at the camping ground office. A popular lunchtime and early evening destination for flyers.
